I will like to express my sincere welcome to all the participants to the First ZHITU Symposium in Civil Engineering among 5 universities namely, Zhejiang University in China, Hong Kong Polytechnic University in China, University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign in the USA, University of Tokyo in Japan, and Ulsan National Institute of Science & Technology in Korea. ZHITU is ‘智途’ in Chinese, which means ‘A Smart Path for the Future’.
The purpose of the Symposium is to promote international collaborations in education, research, and exchange programs among the 5 universities in the areas of civil engineering The world is facing a new era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution characterized by the artificial intelligence (AI) technologies integrating current information technologies (IT) with emerging technologies such as big data, cloud computing, and Internet-of-Things. Civil engineering profession has to lead the technological developments and innovations related to the challenges in the new era in order to provide safe-resilient-sustainable civil infrastructure to the public.
Hangzhou is a city with long history and many beautiful places. We organize a cultural tour to the West Lake on 14 July. I hope you enjoy the beautiful city of Hangzhou during the symposium period.
