The Hydraulic Structure and Water Environment Institute (HSWEI) can trace its origin back to the hydraulic laboratory established in 1927 in the Department of Civil Engineering of Zhejiang University. The hydraulic laboratory was then developed into the Hydraulic Research Center in 1956 and the Institute of Hydraulic Structure and Water Environment Institute in 1993. Over time, the institute has established state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities.

HSWEI provides a variety of hydraulic engineering degree programs from undergraduate to master and doctoral programs as well as postdoctoral program. Under the subject of hydraulic engineering in HSWEI, there are two sub-disciplines listed, which are Hydraulic Structure Engineering and Hydraulics & River Dynamics.

Current people includes 11 full time academic staff, 7 postdoctoral researchers and over 30 post-graduates. Their focus areas are:

·         Hydraulic Structure Fracture and High Performance Concrete Materials;

·         Hydraulic Structure Optimization and Structural Health Monitoring;

·         Hydraulic Structure Disaster Prevention and Water Safety; and

·         Hydraulics and Water Environment Simulation.

HSWEI provides nationally leading research and teaching, and has been recognized as an institute who have made remarkable contributions to scientific and technological progress. HSWEI has been awarded several honors including State Science and Technology Prize, National Teaching Achievement Prize, National Excellent Teacher, National Young People Science Prize and so on.

Graduates from HSWEI possess knowledge and skills as engineers in various industries such as hydraulics engineer, civil engineer and transportation engineer, or solve scientific or industrial challenges as researchers in colleges and research institutions, or work in government.
