Zhejiang Province is one of the most developed areas in China for its social economic developments and urbanization. The Research Institute of Urban Planning and Design (RIUD) in Zhejiang University is the first research institute in Zhejiang in the urban-rural planning discipline. It cultivated the first master, the first doctor, the first professor and the first postdoctoral researcher in urban and rural planning discipline in Zhejiang Province. Its mission is to build a resource center that will enhance international collaborative researches, which would research and respond to the cutting-edge issues of China's urban-rural development, planning and construction, organization and management from the global perspective, and to cultivate international high-end professionals. Specifically, RIUD pays close attention to the cooperation with other academic and research institutions. Based on the real practices in Zhejiang and China, it aims to develop suitable planning theories and methods for analyzing the developments and problems in urban-rural spaces and environment, to influence and support the planning and design theories and methods in livable environment. On the basis of cooperation researches in recent years, it has completed a large number of national and provincial research projects and design projects. These projects include the topics such as regional development and planning, urban-rural planning and design, housing and community construction planning, history of urban-rural development and conservation planning, urban-rural ecological environment and infrastructure planning, urban-rural planning management etc.
