The Institute of Architectural Technology of Zhejiang University, formerly known as the Laboratory of Architecture and Environmental Physics of Zhejiang University, was able to grant master degree in architecture and technology in 1981. The institute was established in 2002 to be responsible for teaching, scientific research and social services of the secondary discipline of architectural technology, as well as some of undergraduate teaching and training tasks in the Department of Architecture. There are 13 members in the institute, including 2 professors, 6 associate professors and 5 lecturers. Three of them are qualified tutors for doctoral students and eight for master students. One member is at the first training level of Zhejiang provincial 151 talent project; six members have doctorate degree abroad or have oversea study experience for over a year. Many have served as directors, vice-directors, or members of many important professional committees such as Committee of Green Building Evaluation of the Ministry of Housing and Construction, Committee of Energy Conservation and Green Building of China Urban Science Association, Committee of Architectural Physics of China Architecture Society, Committee of Chinese Acoustics Standardization, and Committee of Zhejiang Acoustics Society.

The main research field of the institute is sustainable building environment construction and energy conservation, including heat and humidity of building environment, sound environment, air environment, green building and sustainable building, building energy efficiency and energy conservation technology, regional energy planning, etc. Since the 11th Five-Year Plan, the Institute has undertaken dozens of national science and technology programs, national key research and development programs, projects from national natural science fund, provincial and ministerial fund, such as from the Ministry of Housing and Construction, Ministry of Education, with an average annual research funding of more than 4 million yuan in the past three years. At the same time, the institute also undertook various scientific research and consulting projects in combination with the development of building industry in Zhejiang province. In addition, the institute has been working closely with relevant overseas universities to carry out research work.  A number of influential research results have been achieved in aspects such as external wall insulation, building life cycle carbon emissions, solar energy utilization, regional energy planning and energy use behavior, basic theory of indoor acoustics, sound landscape, hall sound quality, etc. Several members have been awarded by the National Ministry of Culture, Zhejiang Province, Guangdong Province for Science and Technology Progress, and won National Excellent Urban and Rural Planning and Design Prize, Zhejiang Provincial Excellent Urban and Rural Planning and Design Prize, Zhejiang Provincial Building Science and Technology Award, National Ministry of Education Excellent Design Prize, and Zhejiang Provincial Excellent Engineering Design Prize, etc.

The institute enrolls more than 10 master and Ph.D candidates each year. Many members have been selected as Excellent Teacher of Zhejiang University by students.
