The Institute of Transportation Engineering was established in 2000, and its predecessor was the Department of Roads and Bridges. The research field of the institute covers four secondary disciplines, namely, bridge and tunnel engineering, road and railway engineering, transportation information and control, transportation planning and management. The institute offers master's and doctor's degree programs in bridge and tunnel engineering, and its own doctoral degree program in road and traffic engineering under the primary discipline of civil engineering. Currently, there are 27 faculty members engaged in teaching and scientific research in the institute, including 9 professors, 12 associate professors, 2 senior engineers, 1 researcher, 3 lecturers, 10 doctoral supervisors and 21 master supervisors. One member is in the Recruitment Program of Global Experts, and two are supported by Outstanding Youth Fund.

Relying on the comprehensive advantages of Zhejiang University and College of Civil Engineering and Architecture, the institute focuses on interdisciplinary integration and innovation, developing research directions such as bridge structure analysis theory, long-term performance and health monitoring of bridges, bridge dynamic catastrophe and vibration control, bridge construction method and control, bridge maintenance and reinforcement, tunnel fire prevention and safety, pavement structure analysis theory, transportation geotechnical engineering, pavement material road performance, urban transportation planning and management, and urban and regional transportation information and control. In recent years, centering on the major engineering requirements of national transportation science and technology and local transportation, the institute has undertaken or participated in several 973 and 863 projects and the national and provincial natural science foundation, and has also won a number of provincial and ministerial science and technology awards with rich achievements. At the same time, the institute has participated in solving many key technical problems in the construction of large-scale projects such as Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, Hangzhou Bay Cross-ocean Bridge, Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway and Sutong Yangtze River Bridge. The scientific research fund has increased continuously and rapidly over the years, and the annual scientific research fund has reached more than 30 million RMB, which has made important contributions to promoting the technical progress in the field of transportation, and transforming scientific research achievements into productivity, and serving the local transportation construction.
