Since the founding of the Institute of Municipal Engineering at the Zhejiang University in 1999, it enjoys a good reputation for excellence in graduate education and research. Municipal Engineering Institute at the Zhejiang University is a deputy minister unit of steering committee for water supply and drainage engineering in the civil engineering of colleges and universities at Department of Housing and Urban Rural Construction, deputy minister unit of mechanics basic course teaching guidance committee at the Ministry of Education, and leader unit of teaching steering in hydraulics.
Distinguished faculty
There are eighteen teachers in the institute , including six professors (researchers), eight associate professors (senior engineers), four lecturers. Among them, there are one double employed academician, one expert of "the recruitment program of global experts"(short-term), one super expert in Zhejiang Province, and one of Zhejiang University "hundred talent projects". Moreover, there are seven teachers with PhD student enrollment eligibility, fourteen teachers with graduate enrollment eligibility. In 2010, based on the municipal institute engineering at Zhejiang University, Hangzhou Green Water Science & Technology Co. Ltd, Jiaxing City Water Investment Group Co. Ltd, Zhejiang Design Institute of Water Conservancy and Hydroelectric Power, Zhejiang University of Technology, the Architectural Design & Research Institute of Zhejiang University Co. Ltd, Hangzhou Yongjieda Purification Technology Co. Ltd, "Zhejiang Province Scientific and Technological Innovation Team on drinking water safety and urban water environment management" was established and awarded. There are fifteen master candidates and six PhD candidates enrolled in the institute every year.
Facilities, equipment
There are water quality analysis and detection laboratory with advanced equipments and analysis capability about 106 water quality indicators of drinking water standard (GB5749-2006), water quality of water distribution system simulation platform, environment hydraulic laboratory and other special laboratories. Moreover, the institute has Zhejiang province drinking water safety and distribution technology laboratory, the safety technology research center for drinking water of villages and small towns at Department of Housing and Urban Rural Construction, and some pilot-scale experiment bases in Jiaxing, Shaoxing, and Zhoushan.
Cutting-edge research
The research in the institute focuses on drinking water safety technology in water distribution systems, drinking water treatment, urban drainage systems, urban water environment management, and municipal infrastructure projects etc. Since "11.5" national plan, the institute has done some great projects including National Major Program on Pollution Control and Management of Water Body, the national 863 project, National Natural Science Foundation of China etc. In 2013, the institute won the first prize of Zhejiang Province Scientific and Technological Progress about "The Research and Application of Water Quality Security Key Technology".
