The Institute of Advanced Engineering Structures of Zhejiang University was established in 2010 and is an important part of the Structural Engineering Discipline of Zhejiang University. It is mainly engaged in the research, teaching and social service of concrete structures, steel structures, new material structures and composite mechanics. Currently, there are 11 full-time teaching and research faculties in the institute, all of whom have had long-term oversea study and work experience in countries such as Germany, the United States, Britain, Japan and France. Among them, there are 6 professors and 5 associate professors, 8 of who have doctoral tutor qualifications and 11 have master tutor qualifications. The institute is home to State Science Found for Distinguished Young Scholars, State Science Found for Distinguished Young Scholars as well as provincial, municipal and university level talent programs. At present, there are altogether more than 80 masters, PhD candidates, and postdoctoral researchers in the institute. Because of its distinctive features and international vision, the institute has been awarded Innovation Model Team by Zhejiang University and Key Scientific and Technological Innovation Team by Zhejiang Province. A high-performance material and structure cross-disciplinary research platform has been built, including multi-scale experiment and observation systems from nano, micro, to macro, and experimental systems from static, dynamic to fatigue loading, observation and data acquisition.

The Institute of Advanced Engineering Structures of Zhejiang University pays special attention to the combination of basic theory innovation and engineering practice. In recent years, it has undertaken more than 60 national, CMC logistics department major projects, provincial and ministerial scientific research projects, such as the National Science and Technology Support Program, the National 973 Program, the National 863 Program, the National Natural Science Fund for Major International Cooperation Projects, the National Natural Science Fund Key Projects, and the National Natural Science Fund for Outstanding Youth Project. To meet the major needs of national engineering construction, influential research results have been achieved in areas such as the concrete structure crack safety evaluation theory and control technology, high-performance civil engineering material research and development and structural application technology, concrete structure life-cycle design theory, advanced steel structure design technology and stability theory, and steel-concrete composite structure foundation theory and design.  The research results have been applied to many major projects such as Xiangjia Dam of Jinsha River, Danjiangkou Dam of South-to-North Water Diversion Project, Shanghai Wusong Military Port, Dubai Meden Racetrack, Kunming Century Square, Shanghai Qinshan Nuclear Power Station Phase II, Hangzhou West Lake Impression Upgrading Project, Jiaodong International Airport, Nanchang Huahao Center, Hangzhou Qiushi Elevated Road, Zhejiang Jinliwen Expressway, Yunjing Expressway, etc. Some of the results have been adopted by the design codes and regulations of steel structures at home and abroad.  The institute has won the Second Prize of the National Natural Science Award, the Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the First Prize of the Provincial and Ministerial Technology Invention Award, the First Prize of the Provincial and Ministerial Natural Science Award and 9 other major science and technology awards.
