The Institute of Spatial Structure is one of the earliest research institutions of spatial structure in China. There are a number of excellent scholars in the institute, including a fellow of Chinese Academy of Engineering, a receiver of State Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, two receivers of New Century Creative Talents of the Ministry of Education and three receivers of the State Council Special Allowance. All faculties have oversea study/research experience and the institute has cooperated with a number of research teams from world-class universities such as Harvard University, Oxford University, Cambridge University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champ, Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Maryland, North Carolina State University and so on.The research works mainly focus on new systems and new methods in spatial structures, structural health monitoring and control, and deployable/retractable structures. The institute has cultivated a large number of innovative people in the area of spatial structure. At present, there are more than 80 postgraduate students studying in the institute. The institute is the founder of  National Forum for Doctorate Students in Spatial Structure and academic journal Spatial Structures, and also the host of  National Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Design & Construction Technologies of Advanced Structures  and  Key laboratory of Spatial Structure of Zhejiang Province. In last decade, the institute has received more than 60 national or provincial research grants which include National “863”Program, National Science and Technology Research and Support Program, National Key R&D Program, National Natural Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, Key Fund of National Natural Science Foundation, pre-research Project of General Armament Department and so on. The institute also emphasizes on technology development and engineering application, and has solved many engineering problems raised in the design, construction and operation of large-scale spatial structure. The institute has provided technology support for hundreds of large-scale and complex buildings which include National Theatre, National Aquatics Center, National Stadium, Terminal 3 of Beijing International Airport, Axis of World Expo 2010 Shanghai, UK Pavilion of World Expo 2010 Shanghai, Ji'nan Olympic Sports Center Stadium, Beijing North Train Station, New Shengzhen North Train Station, Tianjing West Train Station, Xiamen West Train Station, Hangzhou East Train Station, Hanghzhou Olympic Stadium and so on. Due to its distinguished contributions in science and technology of spatial structure, the institute has received 18 major scientific and technological awards which include National Scientific and Technological Progress Awards, Provincial Scientific and Technological Progress Awards, Engineering Science and Technology Innovation Award of Beijing Olympic Games, Zhejiang Province Science and Technology Major Contribution Award, Zhan Tianyou Civil Engineering Award et al.
