More than thirty students and seven teachers from the University of Hong Kong（HKU), Scuola universitaria professionale della Svizzera italiana(SUPSI) and Department of Architecture, Zhejiang University successfully held 2016 teaching activity of workshop from 26th March to 4th April, 2016. Focusing on the designing task of “small building, micro-community,” this workshop chose the urban renewal of the historic site of Gongchen Bridge in Hangzhou City as the research object. Teachers and students discussed the present features, problems and possible solutions in the urban renewal of Gongchen Bridge area from multiple perspectives such as theories, development strategies and construction practices.During the nearly ten days, teachers and students, centering on the designing task, conducted systematic academic activities including the field research, group discussion, lectures and achievement reporting. Zi Huang, President of Ancient Architectural Design Institute, Hangzhou City, and Xiaoling Dai, Associate Professor of Department of Architecture, Zhejiang University of Technology gave thematic lectures on the planning and designing and the post occupancy evaluation of the historic site of Gongchen Bridge. Besides, Professor EmanueleSaurwein and Professor Remo Leuzinge of SUPSI, Associate Professor Gao Yan of Department of Architecture,HKU, Professor Yong He and Lecturer Weiwei Sun of Department of Architecture, Zhejiang University also held relevant lectures. In this period, teachers and students investigated the representative sites and construction projects of Hangzhou, and visited Southern Architectural Design Institute. After the teaching and learning activities in Hangzhou, they carried out the urban investigation and discussion activities in Shanghai Study Center of the University of Hong Kong. In 4th April, they held public discussion and exchange on the urban sustainable development, in which Yue Wu, Head of Department of Architecture and Professor Yong He also participated.This workshop has deepened the understanding on the urban renewal and development of Hangzhou City of teachers and students from the three universities, has promoted the exchange and friendship among them, and has significantly contributed to the expansion of students’ horizons and the further cooperation among the three universities.
