ZJU CCEA Performs Impressively at 2016 ASCE Mid-Pacific Student Conference

Hosted by American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2016 ASCE Mid-Pacific Student Conference was held at University of Nevada, Reno from April 6th to 9th. Student representatives from Zhejiang University CCEA attended two competitions: GeoWall Competition and Steel Bridge Competition, while University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley), University of California Davis (UC Davis), University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) and several other Chinese universities such as Tongji University and Hohai University also took part in the Conference. After fierce competition, ZJU students won the first place in GeoWall Competition and great result in Steel Bridge Competition.ZJU team for GeoWall Competition consisted of Fu Lei (Grade 2012, team leader), Li Ke (Grade 2013), Zhuang Yansheng (Grade 2013) and Yang Songqing (Grade 2013) and was instructed by Prof. Yang Zhongquan from Zhejiang University Research Center of Coastal and Urban Geotechnical Engineering, Associate Prof. Wang Jinchang from Zhejiang University Institute of Traffic Engineering, Dr. Li Lingling and Mr. Zhou Hongtao from CCEA Experiment Center. Guided by Associate Prof. Shen Yanbin from Space Structure Research Center, the team representing ZJU for Steel Bridge Competition comprised Shen Kai (Grade 2013, team leader and leader for the whole ZJU delegation), Wang Weidi (Grade 2012), Zhan Xingbin (Grade 2013) and Ao Shuang (Grade 2014). Associate Prof. Shen Yanbin led the ZJU delegation for the competition.American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), founded in 1852, enjoys a history of over 150 years. ASCE Student Conference, the highest-level civil engineering competition among university students in the US, holds region conferences annually. With great support from CCEA leadership and patient guidance from teachers, after months of preparation, our students finally achieved great results after overcoming fierce competitions and all the difficulties. Being the third last year, the ZJU team for the GeoWall competition clinched the coveted 1st place at this conference while the ZJU team for the Steel Bridge competition also made progress and did a fantastic job. Their exceptional performance is an accurate reflection of globalization in undergraduate programs in the field of civil engineering, of CCEA students’ capability in world-renowned university-wide competitions and CCEA’s efforts in the implementation of internationalized education.
