On April 23, 2016, Professor Dianhai Wang, Director of the Traffic Control Research Laboratory (TCRL) at Zhejiang University (ZJU), signed a Memorandum with the Professor Washington Ochieng, Head of Centre for Transport Studies (CTS) at Imperial College London (ICL). The collaborative meeting of transport studies between TCRL and CTS was held in the Anzhong Building, Zijingang Campus, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China. The signed memo starts up deep collaboration between the two centers in terms of research, project application, publication, researcher exchange, and teaching. Both directors confirmed the established good basis for existing cooperation, and looked forward to deepened and expanded cooperation in the future. Professor Washington Ochieng welcomed faculty of TCRL, ZJU, to visit CTS, ICL, in an appropriate time period.
In the presentation session, "Hundred Talents Program" Professor Xiqun (Michael) Chen introduced transport studies at ZJU, including representative research outputs in the subjects of traffic control, transport management, transport planning, simulation optimization, and big data. Professor Washington Ochieng presented the history, research, people, students, and emphasized the research mission of CTS aiming to lead internationally in research into all aspects of the planning, design, financing, regulation, operation, maintenance and management of transport systems, services, products and technologies catering for governments, industry and individuals. Professor Yibing Wang, Associate Professor Zhenyu Mei, Lecturer Lihui Zhang of ZJU, and Research Fellow Simon Hu of ICL attended this joint meeting.
In the round-table panel discussion, faculty of both centers discussed on-going collaborative activities, ways to strengthen and expand collaboration through existing projects, academic exchange, and paper collaboration. Funding mechanism from RCUK, ESRC, Royal Society, British Council, IUK, BIS and etc. was identified. Research resources and mechanism from China, e.g. NSFC, MoST, were also presented. There was a brain storming on joint application for ‘Global Challenges Research Fund’ (GCRF) which is a new funding scheme recently created by UK government, and opportunities to set up a unique transport research lab facility at Imperial West (White City Campus), close collaboration with Zhejiang University. Education/Training/Outreach/Exchange Opportunities between two centers were also discussed.
