The 44th International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva, held in April 12, 2016, attracted more than 40 countries and regions and 1,000 new inventions. Mr. Chuan-Zhi Dong (master student supervised by Dr. Xiao-Wei Ye) of our college won the bronze medal with the invention: Bridge Health-check System: a quick, long-distance and non-contact solution.
This invention uses cameras to capture images of bridges under different loadings and obtain the structural displacement, strain/stress and other dynamic parameters. Cameras mounted at a great distance or carried by the drones can check the cracks and corrosion of bridges in detail. As it is not necessary to install the sensors and wires on the bridge, the traffic jam will be avoided caused by the closure of traffic during traditional bridge inspection. The inspection ships or vehicles are also not required. The developed system is capable of realizing bridge safety inspection in a quick, long-distance and non-contact manner.
