Presentation Abstract:
When the Singaporean entry for the solar decathlon contest held in DaTong, China returned to the equatorial city, its ability to function properly under the tropical climate becomes a challenge for the teachers and students at the National University of Singapore in terms of its endurance to humidity, heat, thunder, rain among many other issues such as building codes compliance for construction and design. The project evolves from a re-build towards new-build as researchers soon realize that such new challenges call for a comprehensive redress of those foundation issues such as climate and architecture plays a significant step for the design. The design development that follows acknowledges the need for a respect for the interaction of the forces of design under a new setting. Subsequent evolution brings forth a rebirth of a new mission, that leads to the intent to set up a test bed facility for the all-weather testing of environmental control technologies in response to tropical challenges. The project is an ongoing activity with a target commissioning time of 2017.
