Presentation Abstract:
Sand/rubber mixtures have been investigated by many researchers as useful materials for the protection of buildings during earthquakes. Despite significant experimental research on the effects of the amount of rubber in rubber/sand mixtures, there are contradictory experimental findings and knowledge gaps, particular into the mechanics that explain experimental behaviour of such mixtures. In this presentation a summary of recent and ongoing experimental research using the cyclic triaxial apparatus and DEM simulations of such tests are presented. The results aim to provide a framework for understanding of the fundamental mechanics governing the behaviour of rubber/sand mixtures under cyclic loads.
