The 2nd International Symposium on Coastal and Offshore Geotechnics (ISCOG 2017) & 2nd International Conference on Geo-Energy and Geo-Environment (GeGe2017) were successfully held at Zijingang Campus, Zhejiang University from July 5th to 17th. The meetings were hosted by Zhejiang University, co-organized by Zhejiang Provincial Natural Science Foundation, Zhejiang Provincial Geological Exploration Bureau and China Power Huadong Engineering Coporation, jointly presented by Zhejiang University National Marine & Civil Engineering Joint Research Center, and Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Marine Geotechnical Engineering and Materials, and strongly supported by International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. Prof. Yonghua Song, Executive Vice President of Zhejiang University, Zhengguang Wu, Director of Zhejiang Provincial Natural Science Foundation and Prof. Lizhong Wang, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the conference attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches.
The meeting covers three major areas of Coastal and Marine Geotechnics, Energy Geotechnics and Environmental Geotechnics, discussing geotechnical challenges in marine development, energy development and utilization as well as environmental protection, and seeking solutions. These three areas are closely related to the blue and green strategy in the 13th Five-Year Plan issued by National Natural Science Foundation in June 15th, 2016, with blue referring to the ocean and energy, and green referring to the environmental protection. There are 26 eminent overseas experts and scholars from 15 countries and regions in four continents at the conference to give keynote speeches and plenary talks, including 6 foreign academicians, 3 Rankine Lecturers, and 2 Terzaghi Lecturers (Rankine Lecture and Terzaghi Lecture are the highest honor in international geotechnical engineering). Around 200 experts from dozens of well-known domestic universities and scientific research units, including Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Tongji University, Dalian University of Technology, Tianjin University, Ocean University of China, Hohai University, Wuhan University, Chongqing University, Wuhan Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China Geological Survey Institute of Marine Geology, and Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, attended the meeting.
The conference provides a high quality communication platform and good cooperation opportunity for domestic and foreign scholars to carry out interdisciplinary innovative research in areas such as coastal and offshore geotechnical engineering, energy engineering and environmental geotechnics, playing an active role in strengthening academic exchanges and improving academic level. Meanwhile, the conference promotes the status and vision of Zhejiang University, expanding the international influence of the school in the field of marine geotechnical engineering, and contributing to the double first-class construction of civil engineering in Zhejiang University.
