Sponsored by the third international workshop for ZJU graduates of Zhejiang University, the China-Canada Joint Workshop on Civil Engineering was successfully held from August 11 to 19, 2018. Teachers and students from College of Civil Engineering and Architecture went to Canada for an academic and cultural visit.Through academic reports and communications, lab and campus tour, the CCEA delegation obtained a deeper understanding of civil engineering discipline and Canadian culture, and the mutual cooperation and communication between ZJU and Canadian universities was enhanced.

CCEA delegation was instructed by Professor XIE Jiming, Canadian full-time adjunct professor, and led by ZHANG Wei, Deputy Chair of College CPC Committee, and XIONG Sichen, international program coordinator. Student team was composed of two undergraduate students, seven graduate studentsand six Ph.D. candidates. The delegation visited four universities in Canada, namely, University of Toronto, Western University, Queen’s University and University of Ottawa.

The delegation was warmly welcomed by the four Canadian universities. During the workshop, teachers and students from both sides first introduced themselves and their universities, including research work, graduate programs and student activities. Professor XIE, on behalf of the delegation, introduced the development and achievements of ZJU and CCEA, expressing the willingness to cooperatewith Canadian universities on more disciplines and research fields in the future.

Students presentation was held in four universities with graduates from both sidesreporting their latest academic research, topics involving structural vibration, foundation monitoring, wastewater treatment, traffic control, etc., which provideda platform for students to learn research frontiers and gain mutualunderstandings. Heated discussion was raised after each presentation. "We can share the puzzles and experience with students in the same research field while learning about interesting research finding from other fields. It is really a wonderful experience to broaden my horizon and to learn that my research study is of international interested"said one of the delegation members.

After academic reports, the delegation was shown around the civil engineering laboratories of four universities, and many advanced experimental devices were explained to the delegation, such as the node failure experiment in University of Toronto, the extraordinary wind tunnel lab and 3-D model-making lab in Western University, sewage treatment test and concrete high temperature durability test in Queen’s University, ground test and explosive impact test in the University of Ottawa. The delegation was also guided to a campus tour of the four universities to appreciate the architecturesand cultures of Canadian universities.

Towards the end of the workshop, the delegation visited Canadian History Museumand Canadian Parliament Buildings to learn about Canada's unique history and cultural charm.

As a cross-cultural program, the workshop has not only promoted the international influence of ZJU and CCEA, but alsobroadened the international vision of the delegation members and strengthened the communication and cooperation between ZJU and Canadian universities.
