Pavement Performance Predictions by A Mechanics-based Multiphysics Modelling Framework

Abstract:

Pavement performance prediction is fundamentally a multiphysics problem coupling environmental physics (heat transfer, moisture diffusion, etc.), chemical reactions (oxygen diffusion, oxidation kinetics, etc.) and mechanical responses (deformation, fracture, damage, etc.). To accurately and reliably predict the road material behaviours and pavement performance, comprehensive mechanics-based constitutive models are needed which can remove all systematic errors (assumptions), for not only asphalt layers but base and subgrade layers. This presentation introduces an anisotropic viscoelastoplastic-fracture (VEPF) for modelling asphalt mixtures and a nonlinear anisotropic elastoplastic (NAEP) model to model unbound granular base materials. A weak-form partial differential equation (PDE) based finite element modelling (FEM) method was employed to efficiently couple and solve the circular dependence between the multiple physics occurring to the road materials and structures. Preliminary validations based on laboratory tests demonstrated that the comprehensive mechanics-based constitutive models can accurately predict the material behaviours under a variety of temperature and loading conditions without the need of model calibrations. The weak form PDE based FEM is an efficient tool to solve the multiphysics problem in the road structure. Ongoing work includes to couple the ageing and healing effect to the mechanical models for the asphalt layer.

Bio:

Dr. Yuqing Zhang is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Highway Engineering and the Deputy Director of Aston Institute of Materials Research (AIMR) at Aston University in Birmingham, UK. He earned his Bachelor and Master’s Degrees at Southeast University in Nanjing, and Ph.D. Degree at Texas A&M University. Dr Zhang moved to the UK in 2015 and is now leading an infrastructural material research group at AIMR. His research is focused on mechanics based multiscale and multiphysics modelling of pavement materials and structures. He is also collaborating with Aston’s European Bioenergy Research Institute (EBRI) on renewable construction materials. As a PI, Dr Zhang has secured half-million Euro research projects from European Horizon 2020, Royal Society, Royal Academy of Engineering and British Academy in the past 3 years.
