Introduction to the Lecture:

The Lecture is inspired by the construction of a railway tunnel line very close to the well known Sagrada Familia temple in Barcelona (A UNESCO world heritage monument). The presentation discusses the available procedures to protect existing structures against deformations induced by tunneling. Some analytical solutions for concentrated loads in a half-space and the presence of volume loss or volume increase at any point serve to develop generalized procedures to analyze in detail the three-dimensional interaction between tunneling and compensation grouting on pile foundations.
