Place:Room B328, Anzhong Building

Introduction

Reinforced concrete (RC) is the most widely used modern construction material in the world, where concrete provides the compressive strength, while reinforcement improves the tensile and shear properties and provides a degree of crack resistance. Steel has been used as reinforcement in concrete infrastructures for more than a century. However, corrosion of reinforcing steel is the leading cause of deterioration of RC structures, particularly in coastal areas and in areas where de-icing salts are routinely used. The production of Portland cement, a traditional binder material in concrete, accounts for around 8% of global CO2 emissions. Thus, it is urgent to develop novel sustainable and durable RC systems for infrastructures. This talk is focused on the development of novel sustainable and resilient materials with desired engineering properties for civil infrastructure using industrial by-products/wastes to provide affordable, sustainable and resilient infrastructures to society that is a major global challenge facing civil engineers and construction industry.
