On February 22, 2024, the delegation from the college of Civil Engineering and Architecture of Zhejiang University embarked on their journey to Japan to commence their academic exchange activities at Kyoto University's Katsura Campus. Established in October 2003 as the third campus, Katsura Campus is notable for its modern research facilities and the educational philosophy that integrates technology and science.

Led by the enthusiastic faculty of Kyoto University, the delegation first toured the Architectural Design Graduation Exhibition of the 2023 academic year. The exhibition displayed a series of creative and exquisitely crafted design models, providing significant inspiration to the delegation members. Subsequently, the delegation visited several advanced laboratories related to architectural technology, gaining insights into the latest research in wood structure reinforcement, the mechanical properties of ancient buildings, and enhancing the performance of steel structures.

Besides the in-depth laboratory tours, the delegation also examined several buildings on campus, including the iconic Kyoto University Clock Tower and the library, known for its simple and bright design. Each structure showcased Kyoto University's exquisite craftsmanship in architectural design and campus planning.

In the afternoon, the delegation headed to the Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI) located in Uji, where they were warmly welcomed. Since its establishment in 1951, Kyoto University's DPRI has become one of the leading authorities in the field of disaster research and management globally. Through detailed presentations by local professors, the delegation learned about the institute's extensive research in areas such as floods, storm surges, tsunamis, earthquakes, landslides and debris flows, volcanic activities, meteorological disasters, and water resource management. These research areas are divided into four main departments: Earthquake and Volcano, Ground, Atmospheric Water, and Integrated Disaster Prevention.

This visit deepened the delegation fromthe college of Civil Engineering and Architecture of Zhejiang University's understanding of the urgency of disaster prevention and reduction, and clarified the importance of science and technology in the field of disaster preparedness. The delegation members also appreciated the professionalism and deep sense of responsibility towards societal safety exhibited by the researchers and scholars engaged in this field.

The exchange has strengthened the academic links between the college of Civil Engineering and Architecture of Zhejiang University and Kyoto University, laying a solid foundation for future cooperation in scientific research and student exchanges. The delegation from the college of Civil Engineering and Architecture of Zhejiang University looks forward to more in-depth cooperation with Kyoto University on various levels, to jointly promote the development of global scientific research and education.
