CCEA GO GLOBAL International Vision Expansion Program Students Visited Korea
Launched in 2017, the CCEA GO GLOBAL International Vision Expansion Program aims to cultivate talents with international competitiveness. From July 14-18, 2024, a delegation from Zhejiang University’s College of Civil Engineering, led by Professor Yun, Professor Tong, and teacher Shen, visited Seoul National University (SNU), Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). These visits aimed to enhance academic exchange and explore opportunities for international collaboration.
Seoul National University (SNU)
On July 15, the delegation began their visit at SNU, South Korea’s premier institution. SNU’s Professor Yong-Sung Park provided a comprehensive overview of the university’s history, academic structure, research fields, student population, and international partnerships, emphasizing their support for international students. Professor Jingzhong Tong from Zhejiang University introduced Zhejiang’s history, structure, and research focuses, highlighting a strong desire for collaboration with SNU.
During the student exchange session, Yantong Zhang from Zhejiang University shared her experiences and research on green buildings, which sparked great interest among the attendees. Soomin Kim from SNU presented her research on the "Verification of Aero-hydrodynamic Analysis Code" related to floating bridges, leading to an in-depth technical discussion with Professor Tong.
The delegation also toured the Extreme Performance Testing Center (EPTC), guided by student An Junryong, who explained the center's advanced research equipment. The visit underscored the importance of international research cooperation, a sentiment echoed by both universities.
Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST)
On July 16, the delegation visited UNIST, a top research university known for its focus on science and technology. The visit began with an introduction to UNIST’s history, current status, and global academic standing. Professors from the Civil, Urban, and Environmental Engineering (CUEE) department detailed their research areas and significant achievements in bridge engineering, earthquake engineering, environmental protection, and sustainable urban development.
UNIST student Seungo Baek shared insights into his daily life and research on urban planning and civil engineering structures. Zhejiang University representatives provided an overview of Hangzhou, student life at Zhejiang University, and their own research topics, offering UNIST students a glimpse into Chinese higher education and research.
The delegation toured the UNIST Research Institute, witnessing its advanced laboratories and research facilities. This experience highlighted the critical role of research environments in scientific progress and motivated the delegation to pursue excellence in their own studies.
Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST)
On July 17, the delegation visited KAIST, renowned for its strong research capabilities and innovative spirit. KAIST’s Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) department, led by Professor Kim Youngchul, presented their "SURE" framework, encompassing sustainable environments, smart city systems, resilient infrastructure, and energy systems. Professor Tong reciprocated with an overview of Zhejiang University’s history, achievements, and research strengths, proposing potential collaborative efforts.
Student representatives from both universities exchanged research findings, with Nina Xiao from Zhejiang University discussing modern urban residential service facilities and Jaewon Kim from KAIST presenting innovative noise pollution control methods. These exchanges fostered lively discussions and highlighted the potential for future collaboration.
The delegation also visited KAIST’s AI mobility lab, geothermal lab, and concrete lab, gaining hands-on experience with cutting-edge research equipment and discussing recent advancements.
The visits to SNU, UNIST, and KAIST significantly strengthened the academic ties between Zhejiang University and these leading Korean institutions. Both sides expressed a keen interest in furthering collaboration in civil engineering, urban planning, environmental protection, and more. This exchange marks the beginning of a promising partnership aimed at addressing global engineering challenges through shared knowledge and joint research efforts.
