Knowledge of the rock mass strength is required for the design of many rock engineering structures. For this purpose, it is necessary to obtain design parameters such as deformation moduli, peak and residual strength parameters, and dilation angle for numerical modeling and design. The GSI system proposed by Hoek et al. (1995) and the generalized Hoek–Brown failure criterion are now widely used for the estimation of the rock mass peak strength and the rock mass deformation parameters. A quantitative approach to assist in the use of the GSI system is presented. It employs the in-situ block volume and a joint condition factor as quantitative characterization factors to determine the peak GSI value. To use the GSI system to estimate the residual strength of jointed rock masses, the peak GSI can be adjusted to a residual GSIr value. Methods to estimate peak and residual block volumes and joint surface condition factors are presented. In addition, methods of determining other design analysis input parameters such as tensile strength and Hoek–Brown constant mi are presented. The determined Hoek–Brown rock mass strength parameters and deformation modulus can be used in numerical analyses for safe and cost-effective engineering design.

蔡明教授长期从事岩体强度理论及其在工程中的应用的研究工作,研究领域包括地下工程结构的岩体支护、岩爆机理、声发射及岩石破裂失稳过程的关联,多维数据可视化,数值解析在工程中的应用等。主持和参与的工程咨询和科研课题涉及采矿、土木、水利、核废料深部地层处理等领域,跨越中国、日本、加拿大、美国、法国、澳大利亚、瑞士、英国等国界。研究成果在世界范围内得到同行认可,很多成果已经在许多工程设计中得到应用。劳伦森大学终身教授和地质力学讲席教授,东北大学特聘教授,加拿大安大略省注册工程师,国际岩石力学学会会员,加拿大岩土工程学会会员,加拿大隧道工程协会会员,曾任国际岩石力学学会Spalling及Dynamic Testing专业委员会会员。目前是国际权威学术刊物Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering, Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology, International Journal of Geohazards and Environment, Canadian Geotechnical Journal杂志编委。论文曾获得日本土木工程师学会、岩石力学与工程学报(英文版)、第13届国际岩石力学大会最佳论文奖。2017度获加拿大岩土工程协会富兰克林奖。蔡明教授已发表高水平杂志学术论文100 余篇,会议论文70 余篇,工程咨询报告60 余篇,专利4项,专著2部,多篇文章成为相应国际学术杂志引用次数最多的文章之一。到2019年4月22日为止,Google Scholar的被引用总次数为4841,h-index为32,i10-index为62,单引最高488次。
