·         你将是我的第一批学生(第一个或第二个),因此你会深度参与一个科研团队的初创,这些经验对你毕业后的职业发展至关重要(事实上我也是我导师的第一名博士生,这让我获益良多);

·         你会接受细致而严格的学术/科研训练,在过去8年中,我指导了超过10名本科生和硕士生的科研工作,其中40%将他们的工作发表在了很棒的期刊上,例如Cement and Concrete ResearchCement & Concrete Composites

·         你有机会在几个新的且受广泛关注的建材子领域开展工作,例如生物混凝土,自愈合技术,低碳材料等;

·         你有机会接触理论研究、实验工作甚至实际工程项目(在稍远一点的将来,如果你有兴趣);

·         你有机会进行交叉学科的研究(土木+生物/材料/化学);

·         对事物旺盛的好奇心,不仅限于科研方面;

·         与你的同学相比,你有更扎实力学、物理和数学基础;

·         过硬的动手能力;

·         一些科研经历;

Advertisement: PhD/MPhil position in Civil Engineering, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (2020 Spring/Fall admission)

Hi there, I am so happy this ad has reached you! My name is Jishen Qiu; I am a new assistant professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of HKUST in the coming fall. HKUST is ranked 37 in QS2019 global university ranking, its civil engineering program is ranked 23 in this subject globally. HKUST provides competitive scholarship for all research postgraduate students; outstanding applicants may apply for HKPFS (Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme), which provides annual stipend of HK$309,600 (approximately US$40,000). My research engages sustainability and smartness in the future infrastructures, by developing novel construction materials, such as self-healing cement-based composites, ultra-ductile concrete, and bio-inspired living materials.

You may learn about me and my work through links:

A few good reasons to join my group:

·         You will be one of the first students (the first or at least the second, to be more specific), it means you will be deeply involved in the starting-up of a research team, which could be crucial in your future job search (actually I was the first student of my advisor, I believe I learned extra in this role);

·         You will receive rigorous academic/research training so you can work independently after you get the degree; in the last 8 years, I mentored over 10 undergraduate/master students in their lab work, 40% of which got their results published in top civil engineering journals like Cement and Concrete Research and Cement & Concrete Composites;

·         You will have access to research topics of high impact, like bio-concrete, self-healing concrete, CO2 sequestration;

·         You will work on both theoretical and experimental projects; in the future, possibly application-oriented projects (if that’s your career interest);

·         You may be a part of interdisciplinary collaboration (civil engineering + biology/materials science/chemistry);

·         It is my goal to build an open and healthy working environment for the team (PhD can be a stressful journey, it’s an advisor’s duty to help out).

Some requirements and expectations on you:

·         Bachelor degree or above in civil engineering, materials engineering, mechanical engineering, engineering mechanics etc.

·         Strong curiosity, not only for natural science, but also for other areas

·         Well-above-average performance in mechanics, physics, and math

·         Handy, quick learner in lab

·         Some research experiences

·         You don’t have to fulfill every criterion above

Last but not the least, I will not over-emphasize on the competitive edge from a master’s degree, prospective bachelors are equally welcome to apply. You may reach me at cejqiu@ust.hk. Please include your CV, transcripts, and preferably a brief personal statement (no more than one page).
