Abstract: Sustainable construction via materials innovation and CO2 technologies has been gaining increased attention in recent decades, especially in light of emerging initiatives to reduce waste and CO2 emission. Wastes that are rich in calcium and magnesium could be a first-rate medium for CO2 sequestration to form thermodynamically stable carbonate minerals. The major practical applications of CO2-activated wastes include utilization as binders, granulated aggregates and compacts for paving or building purposes. In addition, discarded concrete waste (e.g. crushed aggregate and fines) can be enhanced by CO2 activation and reused in concrete construction to minimize the environmental impact during its life cycle. To further lower environmental issues associated with CO2, recent applications have focused on direct injection of CO2 into ready-mix concrete as well as using CO2 instead of water as activator for non-hydraulic carbonate binders. In this presentation, the progress in academic research of utilizing wastes and CO2 and their applications for use in construction industry will be introduced. Apart of the key advantages, the limitations restricting a larger scale application of the technologies and the trend for future development will also be discussed.
