报告人:英国牛津大学Byron W. Byrne博士

Byron Byrne is a University Lecturer at Oxford University with research interests in offshore and geotechnical engineering with a focus on foundation design, pipelines and offshore renewable energy. He was an undergraduate at the University of Western Australia, studying under Professor Mark Randolph, graduating in 1996. He moved to Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship where he completed his PhD in 2000 under the supervision of Professor Guy Houlsby. The topic of his PhD research was novel foundations for offshore structures and involved mostly experimental work on shallow foundations. Since 2000 he has been a member of the teaching and research staff at Oxford first as a Departmental Lecturer and for the past five years as a University Lecturer. He has published over 50 papers in international peer reviewed journals and conferences. He is currently a member of the Editorial Panel of Geotechnique and has recently been appointed to the inaugural editorial board of Geotechnique Letters (a new online rapid publication journal). He is also active in consulting and provides advice to both commercial organisations and the government.

1. General design of shallow foundations: multi-degree of freedom loading
This seminar will cover recent advances in design approaches for shallow foundations moving from typical bearing capacity factor approaches to hardening plasticity approaches. Firstly the motivation for such a change will be outlined and the basic components of a hardening plasticity model will be explored. The experimental basis for the new approach will be considered, firstly three degree of freedom loading and then the extension to six degree of freedom loading. During the talk the equipment used for experimental work will be presented. Finally an example application of the new models will be shown.

2. Offshore wind turbines: piled foundations and suction caisson foundations
This seminar will introduce the topic of offshore wind turbines and other marine renewable energy projects with a particular emphasis on UK progress. For piled foundations the talk will briefly consider the response under cyclic loading, as this is a critical condition, and will present a framework for assessing the response. The talk will then consider recent research on suction installed foundations (suction caissons) covering all facets of the design including issues of installation, capacity, stiffness, cyclic loading performance and scaling. The work covered will be both theoretical and experimental including laboratory testing and larger scale testing in the field.

3. Offshore pipelines: soil-structure interaction
This seminar will cover the behaviour of offshore underwater pipelines as they interact with the seabed. The pipes are normally laid cold but will heat up during operation. This leads to thermal strains in the pipe wall and the possibility of pipe buckling if the pipe is inadequately restrained. In order to avoid buckling the resistance of the soil to pipe movement must be accurately known so that it can be allowed for during pipe design. The pipes can be buried or laid out on the seabed surface and both configurations lead to interesting soil structure interaction problems. This talk will outline recent research on buried pipelines in sand and will also consider issues related to surface pipelines.
