Professor Lam is an educator, researcher, architect and consultant who specialize in life cycle building information modeling and computational design support systems for total building performance analysis and building diagnostics. He teaches architectural design (with a focus on systems integration), building energy modeling, building controls and diagnostics as well as acoustics and lighting. He has completed many major funded research projects, including Integrated Concurrent Design of High Efficiency Commercial Buildings, Digital Building Models for Internet Collaborative Design Computing, Industry Building Product Model for Thermal Simulation, Mapping of Sky Luminance Distribution and Computational Prediction of Daylighting Performance, Energy and Airflow Modeling Tools Assessment for Early Design Phase, Modeling the Performance of Energy Recovery Technology for Packaged Rooftop HVAC Equipment, Guidelines and Goals for Green and Healthy Hospital Operations, as well as Architectural and Technical Standards and Guidelines for the Design and Maintenance of Marine Mammal Facilities. He is currently Carnegie Mellon’s Project Director in the Energy Efficient Buildings Hub (formerly known as the Greater Philadelphia Innovation Cluster (GPIC) for Energy-Efficient Buildings), a U.S. DOE Energy Innovation Hub which received $129 million from the Federal Government's Energy Regional Innovation Cluster (E-RIC) Initiative. His work has been widely published, and he serves as a member of the inaugural Editorial Boards of the Journal of Building Performance Simulation, (Taylor and Francis, UK), and Building Simulation: An International Journal (Springer and Tsinghua University Press).
Professor Lam is a member of the Energy Foundation Board of Directors. He is actively working specifically with their China Sustainable Energy Program on a range of activities including green building codes and standards, education and training, as well as sustainable design demonstration projects in China. He is also a Board member of the Global Buildings Performance Network (GBPN), a Best Practice Network (BPN) partner of an international network of affiliated organizations—the ClimateWorks Network—working to prevent emissions through smart policies in the geographic regions and economic sectors that have the greatest potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. He is a building performance consultant for several major award winning projects in the private and public sectors in Singapore, China and the USA. He is currently Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University, China and the School of Architecture, Chinese University of Hong Kong.
