摘要:
Flow of densely packed granular particles is ubiquitous in nature and industry, such as debris flow, pastes and slurry flows. In this talk, I will present a unified flow regime map for suspended dense granular materials, with an emphasis on the relationships between bulk rheology and particle-scale phenomena. We investigate the rheology using discrete element method simulations of homogeneous, simple shear flow of soft, frictional, spheres, taking particle contact and/or hydrodynamic lubrication into account. For steady shear flow, we delineate viscous, inertial and quasistatic bulk rheology as a function of Stokes number and volume fraction. Transitions in microscopic phenomena, such as interparticle force distribution, fabric, and correlation length are found to correspond to those in the macroscopic flow. The unsteady flow behaviour is probed by studying their response to shear reversal. We observe salient feature of stress evolution, which can be related to microstructure evolution.

Dr Jin Sun is a senior lecturer at the School of Engineering in the University of Edinburgh where he started as a lecturer in 2010. He obtained his PhD degree in mechanical and chemical engineering from Iowa State University in the US in 2007 and conducted his post-doctoral research in Chemical Engineering in Princeton University.
His research aims to establish predictive links between particle properties and interactions and their collective behaviour in dense granular flows during diverse processes, such as debris flow, fluidization and silo discharge. To this end, he employs and develops computational and theoretical tools synthesizing particle-scale experimental data, discrete element simulation, continuum and statistical mechanics in a multiscale modelling framework. Recently, he is focusing on understanding particle behaviour in additive manufacturing processes.
