Tomography technology has been used increasingly over the past decade inmaterial sciences.One of its applications is to unravel the detailed microscopic structureof a porous material and then link this toits macroscopic mechanical and transport properties through pore-scale simulations. The focus of this report isX-ray computed tomography (CT) and focused ion beam/scanning electron microscopy (FIB/SEM),which we have used over the past few decades to investigate different porous materials, ranging fromarable soils, rocks, bio-materials to industrial hydrogen fuel cells. We will begin by introducing the principle of X-ray CT and FIB/SEM method in acquiring digitized 3D structures of opaque materials, and then present several numerical methods we developed to simulate fluid flow and chemical transport in these materials at scales of nanometers to microns. These include water flow in unsaturated media and chemical diffusion into aggregated media such as concrete.

张效先博士本科毕业于原武汉水利电力大学(现武汉大学),1999年获英国纽卡斯尔大学土木工程系博士学位,现为英国利物浦大学工程学院高级讲师。张效先博士的主要研究领域是利用三维图像技术(tomography)和数值模拟相结合的方法研究纳、微观尺度下多孔介质材料的特性和物质传输。其研究领域涉及土壤、石油、燃料电池、土木工程和植物生理等。自2000年至今,已在该领域发表了六十余篇SCI论文。
