Non-contact Air-coupled Sensing of Concrete Structures

Jinying Zhu
Assistant Professor, Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering,University of Texas at Austin

Abstract
Elastic wave-based non-destructive testing (NDT) methods are effective for flaw detection in concrete structures. However, application of elastic wave-based NDT methods for concrete structures is hindered by the physical coupling requirement between sensors and the rough concrete surface, which significantly reduces testing efficiency and consistency. The air-coupled sensing method is proposed as a solution for rapid scanning of concrete infrastructure. Dr. Jinying Zhu will review the development of air-coupled sensing technique for concrete in civil engineering applications. Four stages of the research will be presented: 1) feasibility study through theoretical analysis; 2) air-coupled surface wave velocity and transmission measurement; 3) air-coupled impact-echo test to locate delaminations and voids in concrete; 4) recent progress in air-coupled impact-echo testing by using a parabolic reflector to improve the signal-to-noise ratio.

Dr. Zhu will give a brief information session about graduate program at UT Austin immediately following the seminar. Students who are interested in graduate study in civil engineering, especially structural engineering and construction materials are welcome to attend.

Biography:

Jinying Zhu is an assistant professor in Department of Civil, Architecture and Environmental Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. She received her B.S. degree in civil engineering from Zhejiang University in 1992, and Ph.D. degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2006. Her research interests include NDT for concrete, wave propagation, cement material characterization using ultrasonic waves, and innovative sensing techniques. Dr. Zhu is the pioneering researcher developing air-coupled sensing for concrete. She and her graduate students have received ACI-James Instrument awards for 3 times, and ASNT fellowship award in 2012 for their contributions to NDT in civil engineering. She is also an Associate Editor of ASCE Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering
