Two excellent doctoral candidates are sought to undertake projects funded by an Australian Research Council Linkage grant, and partnered by the University of Wollongong, Penrith Lakes Development Corporation and Coffey Geotechnics.
One candidate will be supervised by Associate Professor Chin Leo in the School of Engineering at UWS. The second candidate will enrol and be supervised by Professor Buddhima Indraratna at the University of Wollongong.
The Project:
The compaction of deep fills is a challenging geotechnical problem which can have a significant impact on the viability of a civil engineering project and on the types of infrastructure supportable by the fills. This project aims to develop an innovative, low cost non-classical method for assessing the quality of compacted fills based on passive ambient noise techniques and by calibration of the soil properties to beneficial effect of compaction that are currently not available. It will provide engineers with a means to control the quality of the compaction works as well as make available the data for subsequent foundation design. The method will be particularly advantageous over current methods for characterizing large extensive sites. The research will involve the application of ambient noisetechniques including field measurements, model refinement, validation and development of design charts. The large-scale laboratory tests will provide the relationships between soil properties and shear wave velocity.
Criteria:
International and domestic applicants are encouraged to apply.
The successful applicant should hold a first degree in Civil/Environmental Engineering or a related discipline equivalent to at least an Australian Bachelor Honours degree, Class 2.1 OR equivalent qualifications and/or experience. A Masters of Geotechnical Engineering or a related field is also desirable.
International applicants must also demonstrate a good command of English. Information about the English language criteria is available on the web:
http://www.uws.edu.au/international/admissions/english_language_requirement
Scholarship:
The scholarship will provide an index-linked, tax-free stipend of $26,669 per annum for up to 3 years. The successful applicant will also be awarded a funded place in the course.
