Peaty soils are the result of an accumulation of partially decayed vegetation or organic matter, hence they are also very variable in terms of water content, fibre content and morphology. Current development of on-shore windfarms in Scotland has introduced the need for a better understanding of the geotechnical behaviour of peat. There is now an increased need for stability assessments and also an additional consideration of ecological impacts caused by drainage changes produced by construction activities.
This presentation gives a review of some of the existing research on peat and then shows the results of long-term experimental studies on intact and reconstituted peats under one-dimensional and triaxial consolidation conditions carried out in modified experimental apparatus. The analysis of these tests intends to demonstrate some of the complexities with peat testing as well as the observed trends and behaviours of this interesting material. The tests provide in some respects an alternative way to explain consolidation behaviour and some of the modelling efforts to reproduce this behaviour are also briefly introduced.
