Title:Mechanics-Based Pavement Analysis and Design – Towards Smart Pavement Design

Time:2018年8月6日(周一)14:00-15:30

Local:安中大楼A322

Abstract

“Current regulations and systems for the design of road pavements are based largely on the empirical basis of weak coupling to the characteristics of the environment, traffic and use of materials. This creates significant restrictions on, among other things development and use of new materials, methods and ways to make demands in procurement. In light of this, since 2008, Prof. Birgisson has carried out an initiative in the research and development of new models for the mechanistic design of road pavements. This project aims at developing a Windows-based Calibrated Mechanics-based pavement design tool. The focus is on rutting and cracking for asphalt layer, as well as deformation and stiffness predictions in the base and subgrade layers. The models also include a new moisture prediction framework.” In addition, the use of smart technologies will be discussed that can enhance the performance of pavements.

Biography

Dr. Bjorn Birgisson currently serves as a Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station (TEES) Distinguished Research Professor and Professor in Civil Engineering at Texas A&M University. Formerly, he served as the inaugural Director of the Center for Infrastructure Renewal. He has published over 200 technical papers in journals and proceedings and been a Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigator of over 50 million dollars in research funding during his academic career. Prior to joining Texas A&M, he served as a Pro Vice-Chancellor for Aston University and the Executive Dean for the School of Engineering and Applied Science and Professor of Transport Science at Aston University from January 2014 to August, 2016. Prior to that, Dr. Bjorn Birgisson was the vice president responsible for research and Professor of Highway and Railway Engineering at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. Dr. Birgisson has served on over 20 boards of centers, institutes and companies during the last 10 years.

Birgisson was a member of the faculty at the University of Florida, where he earned his tenure in 2004, co-established the Center for Pavements and Infrastructure Materials (CPIM) and the Florida Center for Pavement Excellence (FCPE), both in 2001. Between 2006 and 2010, Birgisson led the development of the U.S. National Roadmap for Nanotechnology for Concrete-Based Materials. Dr. Birgisson led the creation of the TRB Task Force (AFN15T) for Nanotechnology-Based Concrete, the RILEM Technical Committee on Nanotechnology for Bituminous Materials, and most recently co-established the new Academy for Pavement Science and Engineering (APSE), which includes over 40 universities from all over the world, for which he serves on the executive board.
